Julie Bruce

Up until 2015 I had a full time management career with little time to pursue my love of art. This all changed when I left work and for many years I considered art as my hobby, that was until I completed an 18 month long Contemporary Atelier with Martin Kinnear RCA on oil painting in early 2025. Since then my work has changed dramatically and I now consider myself a serious artist with my work exhibited in numerous exhibitions around Yorkshire.

Colour has always been my thing and that is what my work is all about. I paint places I know with a level of abstraction, hoping to surprise myself and the viewer on the final outcome. I am not concerned with following the rules of perspective or using the 'right' colour; the 'right' colour for me is the colour that gives me joy and creates emotion in the painting.

I paint in my studio at home in Skipton. My favourite medium to work in is oils and mixed media. Oil paints gives me the flexibility I need when laying down paint and the slower drying time gives me time to smudge, blend and scratch back into the paint. My influences are many but include Monet, Bonnard, Matisse and Van Gogh.
