Ellie Hesse

Ellie's bold and vibrantly coloured townscapes were originally inspired by the beautiful Georgian architecture of the city of Bath, which was her base for a number of years. Art residencies in the South of France, Rome and more recently Sicily, have served to further inspire and develop Ellie's painting style.

Ellie uses a mix of different media and techniques to create her paintings. The base layer usually starts as an abstraction of inks and paints, chosen to set the colour tone of the piece. The body of the painting is then built up in layers using a palette knife, creating stone-like textures and depth of colour. The use of gold leaf brings a certain luminescence to the sky line.

Figures and animals are a more recent feature in Ellie's townscapes. Often introduced in a playful way, they bring the scene to life. Over the past 25 years Ellie’s work has been exhibited by art galleries both in the UK and internationally.
